Amy + Alejandro – Harold Boas Gardens Wedding

A garden wedding by the water’s edge for Amy and Alejandro

Hearts were melting over this gorgeous garden themed wedding for Amy and Alejandro on 9 April 2021, where you could quite literally take the day out of a fairytale book.

With Amy’s intricately designed off-the-shoulder gown and her groom’s sleek black suit, it was a princess marrying her prince from the very first glance at the ceremony to the party that ensued – and what a glorious wedding it was.

I met with the bride during her preparations at the riverfront Ritz-Carlton in Perth, a luxurious and timeless hotel in Elizabeth Quay overlooking the Swan River, skyline and surrounding urban parks. With plenty of room for the bride herself, bridesmaids and parents, getting ready went off without a hitch – champagne glasses in hand, matching pyjamas, and hair and makeup done.

Before we knew it was time for Amy to put her dress and veil on, her smile as wide as it could go, and get portraits with her parents and then her four bridesmaids. The straight angles and wooden floors inside the hotel were the perfect backdrop for preparation photos, including downstairs in the hotel foyer where the futuristic limousine awaited its passengers and everyone hopped in.

My assistant photographer headed to Northbridge to capture the groom’s preparations at his friend’s home, where indeed some of the nerves were showing, but the boys all soon relaxed once suits and ties were on.

They headed off to Hyde Park for a quick grooms group photoshoot, even if just to get some fresh air and let everyone get used to being in front of the camera. But sure enough, Alejandro and his groomsmen did fantastic with the lens and we even got a great ‘wolf pack’-style photo of them all walking through across the street.

The beautiful Harold Boas Gardens are in West Perth, a close drive for both sides of the bridal party from their original destinations. The outdoor location has luscious greenery and a lake, with an incredible amount of shade – perfect for family picnics and of course weddings!

The ceremony was set up right near the water’s edge, a gorgeous circular decorative arch the centrepiece for where Amy and Alejandro would hold hands and declare their vows. Matching white vintage-style chairs awaited all the guests as did a simple garden table and chairs for signing of the documents, really complementing the environment.

As Alejandro arrived, the greetings began and he nervously made his way to the celebrant to await the arrival of his princess bride – and once she arrived, she made a beautiful entrance with both her parents by her side. No one could wipe the smile off Alejandro’s face as he spotted Amy walking towards him, the fairytale having just begun.

Ideal weather, affectionate vows and many happy faces were present at Amy and Aleandro’s garden wedding, and with such a fantastic venue my assistant photographer and I could get around with as many angles as possible, which is always an advantage for the bride and groom with the final photos they see.

With the newlyweds announced, a bride and groom kiss, and signing of the marriage certificate, the walk back up the aisle was full of shared joy and elation as the crowd clapped and cheered. Photos were taken of the newlyweds with all their guests, and then it was time to get a headstart with the bridal shoot, getting some shots of the bridal party at the garden wedding location where we got gorgeous portraits in wide open spaces, on a cute wooden park bench, along a bricked path and beside the water’s edge.

It was a great opportunity for Amy and Alejandro to really relax in front of the lens before heading off in their snazzy limousine to Hibernian Place in Perth’s East End. To describe the area, there’s a lot of historic element to the location, and connects pedestrians to the Perth Cultural Centre – a photographer’s dream when it comes to brides because of all the eclectic props, backdrops and possibilities of truly unique photos. I also made sure to get the whole bridal party in front of the city’s infamous fire station, which is well-known for its green doors and Roman-esque arches.

Amy and Alejandro opted for a cocktail reception at the Westin Hotel, where the wine and champagne flowed, the cake bedazzled, the canapes tasted divine, and everyone could catch up and chat casually without the pressures of a formal dinner. Cocktail wedding receptions are always a fun affair, it’s easier for the bridal party to see their guests and thank them for helping them celebrate.

It also makes for memorable photos with the ease I have of getting around the room.

Following speeches and the cake cutting, Amy and Alejandro showed off their first bridal dance as husband and wife, and I loved the lighting in the room for this particular moment. It provided an incredibly romantic feeling, and you could really see how everyone was intent on watching the happy couple on the dance floor.

To Amy and Alejandro, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day and helping you capture the memories that will be with you until the end of time. I hope your lives together bring you all the joy and love you could ever wish for, and I look forward to keeping in touch with how you’re growing together.
